The Dual Space

Interior Design

The Dual Space is a residential interior design project by Shu-Hui Huang that aims to create a space with separate and interactive living patterns for a couple with different lifestyles.

This project is a residential interior design, situated on a large and elongated site. The owners, a couple with different jobs and living patterns, had distinctive requirements for their living space. The main challenge for the designer, Shu-Hui Huang, was to fulfill the needs of the owners respectively and establish a space that allows for both separation and interaction.

The rectangular public area of the design is divided into four spaces: the gym room, the living room, the restaurant, and the reading room. These spaces serve as interactive areas for the owners to enjoy quality time with family and friends. Additionally, the private area consists of two sets of master bedrooms dedicated to the host and hostess, respectively.

The unique feature of this design lies in its ability to cater to the owners' different lifestyles. The living room's main wall is adorned with light stone and black and white wool cloth, creating a minimalist style with a warm ambiance. The restaurant incorporates dual items to enhance flexibility, while the kitchen island is adorned with warm yellow lights to foster a cozy atmosphere. The dining table, designed to be visually striking, can accommodate joyful parties with loved ones.

The design specifications for this space indicate a total area of 560 square meters. The project was completed in 2016 in Taiwan.

The designer's research focused on understanding the owners' different jobs and incorporating their characteristics into the design. The gym and reading room, for instance, reflect the owners' distinct professional backgrounds. The reading room, with its tranquil atmosphere, caters to the hostess, whose job is related to academia. On the other hand, the gym, with its active ambiance, is designed for the host, whose job is related to commercial business.

The design also overcame various challenges. In the host's bedroom, the bathroom and dressing room are directly connected, allowing for efficient dressing up. In the hostess's bedroom, the walls are adorned with cloth featuring floral patterns, reflecting her graceful personality.

The Dual Space, with its dual ballet-like ambiance, allows the couple to enjoy their lives while maintaining their individual rhythms. It is a testament to the designer's ability to create a space that caters to the unique needs of its inhabitants.
